Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction

In this course, I learned about the characteristics of effective reading assessment and instruction based on the latest research. I learned how to implement these reading assessments through the many case studies in the course and analyzed the data to understand how to develop a plan for the student’s instruction based on these results. Through this course, I became confident in selecting and analyzing the most suitable reading assessments for my elementary students.

TE 848 

Writing Assessment and instruction (PreK-5 Focus)

In this course, I examined many types of writing from narrative to non-fiction writing and poetry and developed a set of strategies to teach writing to my elementary students. This course gave me the opportunity to become a writer myself and experience the process that writers go through as they plan and organize their work. Through the course's teaching project, I was able to undertake research to examine how to motivate struggling writers to become more engaged and willing to write.

Educational Inquiry

Steven Weiland / Nathan Clason

This course examined and helped me think about the many essential questions in education. Through this journey, I began to explore the purposes of education, the concepts of essential knowledge, what is worth knowing and the theories of the mind and curriculum. Additionally, this course explored the meaning of educational inquiry and how our experiences and interests can lead us through different forms of inquiry.

Electronic Assessment for Teaching and Learning

Paul Morsink / Spencer Greenhalgh

This course introduced me to a wide range of digital assessments and helped me design many different learning experiences for students in a digital context. I learned how to start with the end in mind to develop learning experiences that produce the desired mastery outcomes in students. From designing assessments in digital games to creating formative assessments in online content management systems I have developed a wide range of skills for assessing students in digital contexts.

Creativity in Teaching and Learning

Punya Mishra / Carmen Richardson

This course helped me explore the differing meanings of creativity and how technology can help us become more creative teachers and learners. Through the use of various projects, I began to look at a series of 'thinking tools' that can be applied to any topic to help all learners become more creative. Using these tools I created a number of projects and applied the various strategies practiced by the most creative people.

Curriculum in its Social Context

Eli Kean

This course focused on the philosophical, historical, and social foundations of how curriculums are developed. In this course I learned many of the moral implications involved in curriculum design as well as how curriculums are manifested in school settings. This course helped me examine the meanings of educational equity and the possibilities for future curricular innovations.

CEP 805

Learning Math with Technology

Ralph Putnam

In this course I explored the various ways that learning and teaching math can be supported by the use of technology. This course involved extensive evaluations of a large number of math tools and resources ranging from games, apps, and software tools. It also placed the various resources in the context of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics helping to give structure to my thinking about their use. For the course project, I created an extensive library of digital resources that can help my elementary students develop their skills across the standards.

Accomodating Differences in Literacy Learners

This course examined the various instructional and assessment techniques that help teachers accomodate all students in the teaching of reading and writing. The course involved extensive readings of the latest research on best practices and an indepth literacy term project executed in my own classroom. Through my focus on spelling instruction, I developed a pattern based spelling approach that can be implemented in my classroom to differentiate student instruction.

Classroom Management in the Inclusive Classroom

Troy Mariage

This course helped me understand the essential role of leadership in the classroom and to understand the role of classroom management as one of prevention. This course focused on the importance of Positive Behavior interventions and how to develop my own habits of behavior for thinking about instructional practices that meet the needs of students. My project for this course helped me explore in depth my various classroom management strategies and design routines that help create positive behaviors and that minimize behavioral problems.

Capstone Portfolio Course

Matthew Koehler / Sarah Keenan / Spencer Greenhalgh

The capstone course has given me the opportunity to reflect on the my experience in the Masters of Education program. One of the highlights of this course is creating a showcase of my work in the program to outline the range of projects I have undertaken. Throughout the course, I have worked to create a digital portfolio that brings together my personal and professional background and to reflect on my future goals.
